Pyochungsa Temple is a subsidiary of Tongdosa Temple, housing Pyochungsadang Shrine, which was built to commemorate the loyalty and merit of Master Samyeong. Manilru Pavilion was built in 1860, the eleventh year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, by the Seon Master Wolam. It has a distinctive H-shaped plan of forty-eight bays, symbolising the forty-eight vows of Amitabha Buddha, and a floor area of 108 pyeong (a traditional unit of area), symbolising the 108 earthly afflictions; an image of Amitabha Buddha is enshrined within. Also known as Muryangsugak or Seoraegak, it was here that the fourfold assembly of Buddhists formed the Manilhoe, a society dedicated to saving all sentient beings through continuous prayer. It was later used as a seonbang, a hall for Seon meditation practice, and was where Great Master Hyobong, the first Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, spent his final years.
