The stone seated Buddha held at Cheonghaksa Temple has been heavily repaired in places with cement, including reattaching the head, which had been severed, yet the face and the front of the upper body remain intact. In particular, the face and the smile at the corners of the mouth resemble the stone seated bodhisattva images at the Sinboksa Temple Site and Woljeongsa Temple Site in the nearby Myeongju region, suggesting that it was made in the early Goryeo period, the same period as those works. The halo is boat-shaped and, apart from a broken section at the top, is in relatively good condition. The middle-tier stone of the pedestal, removed together with the image, originally consisted of three stones, of which only two remain today. On the eight faces of the octagonal middle tier, an incense burner is carved at the centre of one face, flanked on either side by three offering figures each. Although these relics, including this Buddha image, are not well preserved, they are valuable for revealing the early Goryeo Buddhist sculptural style of Gangwon State, given their early date of production.
