Gwangseongbuwon Temple Group Shrine
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Kim Geuk-seong (1474–1540), a civil official of the early Joseon period and a native of Boryeong. The date of its founding is unknown, but it was first built in Jangsan-ri, Cheongna-myeon; when that area was submerged by the construction of the Cheongcheon Reservoir, his descendants moved the shrine in 1960 to this site, beside his grave. The Gwangsan Kim clan, descendants of Kim Geuk-seong, have long been settled in the Boryeong area as one of its leading lineages. The shrine is a wooden, tile-roofed building with a gabled (matbae) roof, three bays wide and two bays deep, with a single entrance; its enclosing wall is built of a mixture of earth and stone. Kim Geuk-seong took first place in both the lower civil service examinations — the saengwon and jinsa examinations — and the higher civil examination early in his career. Entering government service, he rendered distinguished service in the Jungjong Restoration, the 1506 coup that placed King Jungjong on the throne, for which he was named a Jeongguk Gongsin (Meritorious Subject for the Pacification of the State) and enfeoffed as Lord Gwangseongbuwon; he rose to the office of Right State Councillor.
