An eupseong is a walled town that protected the residents of a county or district while also serving both military and administrative functions. This walled town lies at the foot of Cheolmasan Mountain in Seongnae-ri, Jindo-eup. When Jindo became an independent county in the 19th year of King Sejong (1437), a town wall said to measure 3,400 cheok in circumference and 11 cheok in height was built on the present site, with three gates installed. The Yeojidoseo, an 18th-century geographical gazetteer, records that the wall had 14 ongseong — barbican-like enclosures built to protect the gates — and 58 chicheop — sections of wall projecting outward and topped with a low parapet — that the pond inside the walls measured 4,500 cheok in circumference and 5 cheok in depth, and that there were five wells within the walls. The wall was originally built on a quadrilateral plan, with the western wall shorter than the eastern wall. The best-preserved section is near Gungang Park at the northeastern corner, standing 2–3.5 m high and about 50 m long. The northern wall runs around the outer edge of the grounds of Jindo Middle and High School, the county office and the north side of Jindo Elementary School; behind the county office, about 50 m of wall 1.8–2 m high survives, while behind Jindo Middle and High School only the lower part of the wall, 1–1.2 m high, remains. On the west side, about 50 m of wall survives to the west of the school grounds.
