Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis irregularly shaped fortress was built using the hill behind Hoejin-ri village, Hoejin-myeon, Jangheung County, and is now surrounded by the islands of Deokdo, Noryeokdo and Daemado, which are connected to the mainland. Hoeryeong Garrison Fort was built in April 1490, the 21st year of King Seongjong of Joseon, as the walled fort of a manhojin, a naval garrison command, serving as a navy base to suppress Japanese pirates active along the southern coast. The exact date when Hoeryeongjin was first established is unknown, but according to the Sejong sillok jiriji (Geographical Appendix to the Annals of King Sejong), a garrison had already been set up here in the early Joseon period. In times of war it served as a mustering point for naval forces, while in peacetime it functioned as a supply base storing military provisions and weapons. The surviving walls total 616 m in length. The east wall was built atop a cliff but has now entirely disappeared, though the site of the east gate has been confirmed. The north wall is 2.3–2.5 m high and 1.5–2 m wide, comprising 150 m of stone wall and 220 m of newer wall built of mixed earth and stone, with the 4.4 m wide site of the north gate remaining. The west wall, built of mixed earth and stone, is now about 2 m high on the inside, 3.5 m high on the outside, 2.2 m wide and about 122 m long. Most of the south wall has disappeared, leaving only a stone section about 40 m long and 2–4 m wide.
