Seated Cheongosa Temple Stone Buddha
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This seated stone Buddha, enshrined in the Mireukjeon Hall of Cheongosa Temple, is known as a statue of Maitreya, but its hand gesture suggests that it in fact depicts Sakyamuni Buddha seated cross-legged. The upper part of the halo has been cut away, the eyes and nose are badly worn, and traces of colouring remain in places. The face is depicted disproportionately large relative to the body, and the robe leaves the right shoulder completely bare. The two large hands are shown in the gesture by which the Buddha subdues and banishes all demons. Cheongosa Temple is said to have been founded by the monk Wongwang in the early Goryeo period, but the carving technique of this statue suggests it was made locally in the late Goryeo period.
