Standing Samcheok Imwon-ri Stone Buddha
삼척임원리석불입상 · 三陟 臨院里 石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha image is carved in relief on a single flat slab of stone, with the head and body shown in relief and the slab itself serving as the mandorla, the halo-shaped backing common to Buddhist images. The mandorla, however, is so badly damaged and worn in places that its details are difficult to make out; it is presumed to have been a whole-body mandorla, and it appears to have had no internal decoration such as flame patterns. The stone Buddha stands 142 cm high overall and is 52 cm wide. As a whole, it clearly shows the characteristics of Buddhist images produced under the influence of local Buddhism and folk belief in the Goryeo period.
