Okcheonsa Temple was founded in 676, the 16th year of King Munmu of Silla, by the monk Uisang. It has since been repaired and rebuilt many times, so none of the original buildings survive. The temple's name, meaning "Jade Spring Temple," comes from a clear spring that wells up behind it. The Myeongbujeon Hall was rebuilt in the mid-Joseon period and has remained in its present form ever since. It is said to be the place in the Buddhist world where souls are judged, trying them fairly, much like a modern judicial institution, so that they may rest in peace.
