Gyebongsa Temple Five-story Stone Pagoda
계봉사오층석탑 · 鷄鳳寺五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis five-story stone pagoda stands in the middle of the garden at Gyebongsa Temple. Some say the temple was built under King Seong of Baekje, others that it was built under King Munseong of Unified Silla, but the date is not certain. It burned down under King Heonjong of Joseon and was rebuilt on a small scale under its old name, with the garden laid out as it is today. Only this five-story stone pagoda and a stone trough for catching water remain from the original. The pagoda consists of a five-story body set on a two-tier platform. The name of the pagoda is carved on the front of the upper platform, and pillar shapes are carved at the corners of the body stone on each storey. The supports beneath the roof stones number four tiers from the first to the fourth storey, reducing to three tiers at the fifth storey. The eaves of the roof stones run horizontally before curving sharply upward at the four corners. At the top are finial ornaments including a bokbal, an inverted-bowl-shaped ornament, and an anghwa, a fully-bloomed lotus-flower ornament. It follows the general style of Unified Silla stone pagodas, but the change whereby the roof-stone supports reduce from four tiers to three suggests that it is a work of the Goryeo period.
