Heunghakdang Hall

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seodang, a private village school, established by representatives of eleven local clans to nurture talented youth. It was founded in 1717, the forty-third year of King Sukjong, and renovated in 1755, the thirty-first year of King Yeongjo, and again in 1898, the second year of Emperor Gojong, remaining in its present form to this day. Passing through the gate bearing the plaque "Ipdeongmun", one reaches Heunghakdang Hall itself, a single-row building of three bays across the front and two bays deep. Rooms are arranged on either side of a central wooden-floored hall, preserving the original floor plan from the time of its construction. Although the hall no longer functions as a distinguished local academy, it is historically significant as the birthplace of the Gyenam hyangyak, a local community compact that has carried on the fine customs of the region. The structure and its detailed construction techniques also preserve well the appearance it took on during the Gwangmu 2 (1898) renovation, offering a glimpse of traditional building methods.
