Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tombstone of So Ja-pa, standing at the uppermost point of the Jinju So clan cemetery on the eastern slope of Yonghwasan Mountain. So Ja-pa passed the samasi (the lower civil service examination) in the 14th year of King Seongjong's reign, and after serving as dosa (an assistant official) of the Uibinbu (the office handling royal sons-in-law), he died in the line of duty at the age of 73 while posted at Gurye in the 19th year of King Jungjong's reign. As his son So Se-yang rose in official rank, So Ja-pa was posthumously granted the rank of Gaseondaebu as second minister of personnel (Ijo-champan), and the rank of Sungnokdaebu as deputy first state councillor of the State Council, concurrently serving as commissioner of the Uigeumbu (the state tribunal). The tombstone consists of a base of granite and a body and capstone cut from marble. The four-sided base is carved with a chrysanthemum pattern. The capstone is engraved on its front and back with lotus and cloud patterns, carved with exceptional delicacy and skill. The epitaph was composed by Nam Gon and Yi Haeng, and the calligraphy was written by Kim Hui-su and Seong Se-chang. The tombstone survives complete in form, its inscription is clear, and its carving is of excellent quality. It was erected in the 21st year of King Jungjong's reign (1526), making it the earliest surviving stone inscription handed down in the Iksan region, and it therefore holds important value as a historical source.
