Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChoerakdang Hall was first built about 490 years ago, during the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon (1506-1544), by Kim Ik-gi of the Myeongju Kim clan, who held the post of byeolje (a minor court official). It was later rebuilt by his son Kim Yu, who held the post of busajik (an assistant military officer), and was then called Yaeundang or Ssangbaekdang. The pavilion measures four bays across the front and one bay to the side, and its layout is very simple, consisting of one room and a three-bay daecheong (an open wooden-floored hall). On the ceiling is an inscription of the name 'Choerakdang', written by Kim Seup at the age of sixteen; the characters are so large that a single character fills an entire bay. For more than 400 years, Confucian scholars living in the surrounding area have gathered at Choerakdang to pay tribute to sages of the past and to discuss the Confucian Way, carrying on a long and deep tradition.
