Standing Gadeoksa Temple Stone Buddha
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone Buddha statue, 179 cm tall, is enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Gadeoksa Temple in Songdong-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do; the halo and the body of the statue were carved from a single stone. On the bald head is a low, topknot-shaped cranial protuberance (yukgye), and although the face is too damaged to make out clearly, it appears to have been small and full. The robe, covering both shoulders, falls flatly over a body that is almost rectangular, without any modelling in its folds. Both hands are raised before the chest, with the thumb and index finger touching. The square pedestal on which the statue stands is carved with lotus petals, and the base stone beneath it is carved with corner pillars. Although the halo and face are too badly damaged to make out clearly, the statue's stable bodily proportions and imposing build make it a worthy masterpiece among the stone Buddhas of the Namwon region from the early Goryeo period.
