Jeonghyesa Temple stands on the southern slope of Chilgapsan Mountain and is said to have been founded in 841, the third year of King Munseong of Silla, by State Preceptor Hyejo. The buildings later burned down almost entirely, around 517, leaving only the triad of Buddha statues undamaged. Sixteen years afterwards the Seon monk Inmyeong of Magoksa Temple rebuilt the temple, which was subsequently repaired and reconstructed on several further occasions. In 1907 it was destroyed by a major fire, and in 1908 the monk Wolpa rebuilt it. The temple today houses Daeungjeon Hall, which enshrines the triad of Buddha statues, together with the Sansingak shrine and the Seokguram, Jungam and Seoam hermitages. The signboard of Jeonghyesa Temple was written personally by O Se-chang, one of the thirty-three signatories of the March First Independence Movement.
