Seated Simgoksa Temple Wooden Buddha Triad
심곡사목조삼존불좌상 · 深谷寺木造三尊佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSimgoksa Temple stands on the eastern slope of Mireuksan Mountain in Nangsan-myeon, Iksan, North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province, and is said to have been founded by the Great Master Muyeom at the end of the Silla period. It enshrines a wooden image of Amitabha Buddha as the principal icon, flanked by Gwaneum (the Bodhisattva of Mercy) and Jijang (the Bodhisattva of the Earth Store), both likewise carved in wood. This arrangement of an Amitabha triad appears to carry on the tradition of the Goryeo period. However, the almost square face, the robe covering both shoulders, the horizontal band wrapped around the skirt, and the way the right hem of the robe is folded over to the left all show that the statues were in fact made in the late Joseon period.
