표절사 · 表節祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a shrine built to honour the loyal spirit of the early Joseon military officer General Yang Ji (1553-1592), where his spirit tablet is enshrined and memorial rites are performed. Yang Ji passed the military examination in 1583, the 16th year of King Seonjo, rose through official posts, and served as magistrate of Jeokseong. When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, he fought bravely against the Japanese forces as magistrate of Sangnyeong (an area now north of present-day Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province) and died a martyr's death. After his death, in 1796, the 20th year of King Jeongjo, he was posthumously appointed Minister of Personnel and given the posthumous title Chungmin. Pyojeolsa is a bujomyo, a shrine whose spirit tablet the state has exempted from removal from ritual observance even after the normal period of enshrinement has elapsed. The establishment of such a shrine, and of the rites held for an undying tablet of this kind, is a mark of respect paid by the state, the Confucian scholarly community or a clan to a person of outstanding merit. In that it also reflects an assessment of the deceased's achievements and standing in life, the shrine serves to commemorate and honour the loyal general Yang Ji.
