This is a Confucian academy enshrining the spirit tablets of Songgye Geum In, Samsongdang Nam Mong-o, Suseo Bak Seon-jang and Doeun Gwon Ho-sin, built to commemorate their scholarship and virtuous conduct. It was originally called Giyeongsa Shrine, then raised to the status of Gumanseowon Academy in 1766, the 42nd year of King Yeongjo. It was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, and was restored by local Confucian scholars in 1967; memorial rites have since been held there every year in the third and ninth lunar months. Sanghyeonsa Shrine, which houses the spirit tablets, measures 3 kan across the front and 2 kan on the side — a kan being the bay between the pillars of a traditional building — with a gabled (matbae) roof shaped like the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side.
