Pungyangsa Temple

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine houses the portrait of Bak Se-jung (1595–), a military official of the Joseon period. Bak Se-jung passed the military examination in 1618, the 11th year of King Gwanghaegun, and distinguished himself during the Injo Restoration, for which he was named a first-class meritorious subject. The following year, when Yi Gwal's Rebellion broke out and the king fled to Gongju, Bak safely protected the royal seal; he was honoured as a second-class meritorious subject and appointed magistrate of Chungju. When the Second Manchu Invasion broke out, he raised a righteous army to resist, but on hearing that the king had surrendered to the Qing dynasty of China at Ganghwa, he returned to his hometown. This building was built in 1685, the 12th year of King Sukjong, and renovated in 1905, the 43rd year of Emperor Gojong. It measures 3 kan — a kan being the bay between the pillars of a traditional Korean building — across the front, and its gabled (matbae) roof, shaped like the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side, well illustrates the architectural style of the late Joseon period. The shrine also houses 6 volumes of the Old Documents Handed Down in the Bak Se-jung Family (a Tangible Cultural Heritage item), which provide material for studying the society of the mid-Joseon period.
