This shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Gang Heup (1602-1671), a civil official of the reign of King Hyeonjong of Joseon. Gang Heup passed the jinsa examination in 1630, the eighth year of King Injo, and held the post of semabuwi. When, during the Byeongja horan, the second Manchu invasion, the king knelt before Qing China at Namhansanseong Fortress, Gang abandoned his official post and withdrew to this place to live in seclusion. Here he kept company with Jeong Yang, Sim Jang-se, Hong Seok and Hong U-jeong, then revered as the Five Worthies of Taebaek, debating public affairs together and making nature their companion. The building was erected in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong, to commemorate him, and was rebuilt again in 1938. It measures two kan across the front and two kan to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character "eight" (八) when viewed from the side. The name Iodang is said to derive from the phrases "nak-ocheon" and "jong-onyeon" - enjoying nature as one's own heaven and ending one's years there - meaning to live out one's life delighting in nature.
