Standing Seonamsa Temple Rock-carved Buddha
선암사마애여래입상 · 仙岩寺磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha image carved into a rock face partway up the path from Seonamsa Temple, in Seungju-eup, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, to Daegagam Hermitage, cut in relief into a rock face about 7m high. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls, above which rises a topknot-shaped hair bun. The face, with well-balanced eyes, nose and mouth, is full and serene, and the ears are carved disproportionately large for the face, similar to the ears of the Rock-carved Seated Buddha at Beopjusa Temple (Treasure No. 216). A swastika (卍) symbol is carved on the chest, and the robe is draped over the left shoulder only. The folds of the robe draped over the left arm and covering the chest flow down at length, covering the whole body. The right hand hangs straight down past the leg with the fingers extended, while the left arm is bent with the hand held at chest level, the thumb and middle finger touching. Although carved in simple lines, the elegant face and the fine rendering of the hair surpass the skill typical of local craftsmen. As there are no records or documents concerning the statue, its exact date of production is unknown, but it is presumed to have been made before the late Goryeo period.
