Chukseosa Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
축서사삼층석탑 · 鷲棲寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands in front of the meditation hall. It would originally have had a three-storey body set on a two-tier base, but it has now lost part of the lower base and everything above the second-storey roofstone of the body. On each face of the upper tier of the base, corner and central pillars are carved in relief, and a shallow support is carved where the first-storey body stone rests. Of the body, which survives only up to the second-storey body stone, the first-storey body stone was made separately, while the first-storey roofstone and the second-storey body stone were carved from a single stone. The corners of the body stones bear pillar-shaped carvings like those on the base, and the underside of the roofstones is carved with four tiers of eaves-supports. The purpose of the elongated stone placed on top of the second-storey body stone is unknown. Although the second-storey body stone is markedly smaller than the first, the pagoda retains a neat, well-proportioned form. A reliquary made in 867, the seventh year of King Gyeongmun of Unified Silla, was found inside the pagoda, confirming that it dates from this period.
