This is a Confucian academy (seowon) built to honour the scholarship and virtue of Yun Chan, Yun Yeo-im, Baek Seon-nam, Yun Ji-seon and Yun Ja-min. Yun Chan was a military official of the mid-Joseon period. During the Japanese invasions of 1592, while still a commoner without office, he guarded King Seonjo's carriage and helped him on his flight. He was later appointed Seonjeongwan (a royal messenger-officer) and rose to Deputy Commander of the Five Military Commands Headquarters. Yun Yeo-im was a military official of the mid-Joseon period. He passed the military examination, and in 1622, the fourteenth year of King Gwanghaegun, he was rewarded for manufacturing matchlock guns and cannon and was made Seonjeongwan. He died fighting at the Battle of Ssangnyeong during the Manchu invasion of 1636, and was later posthumously awarded the position of Minister of War. Yun Ji-seon was a civil official of the late Joseon period. He passed the civil service examination in 1662, the fourteenth year of King Gwanghaegun, and rose to the post of Left State Councillor. Being moderate and even-tempered by nature, he avoided being drawn into factional strife and worked to ease the tensions of a rigid political climate. Baeksanseowon was built more than 70 years ago and is grand in scale. The timber used for its pillars was brought directly from Baekdusan Mountain by way of the Yellow Sea, and is in a very good state of preservation. The surviving buildings include a shrine, a lecture hall, and inner and outer three-bay gates.
