Chukseosa Temple Stone Lantern
축서사석등 · 鷲棲寺石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an octagonal stone lantern standing within Chukseosa Temple. Centred on the fire chamber stone, which housed the light, it has a three-tiered base below and a roofstone with a finial above. The lower base stone is carved with lotus flowers, each petal tipped with a small floral ornament. The central pillar erected above it is somewhat short and connects the lower and upper base stones. The underside of the upper base stone bears a lotus carving symmetrical with that below. The fire chamber stone has windows on four sides to let the light spread out; it appears large in relation to the short central pillar, giving the whole lantern a heavy impression. The roofstone, which is badly damaged, has no particular carving, and on top sits a finial resembling a miniature roof, with a small floral ornament rising at each of its eight corners. Judging from its overall composition and carving technique, it is presumed to have been erected in the early Goryeo period.
