The Urijeol 5cheung Stone Pagoda stands in front of the Gwaneumjeon Hall (a hall dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokitesvara) of Urijeol Temple, which was only recently founded. The pagoda was donated in 1998 by a parishioner of Urijeol Temple, and neither the temple nor the site where it originally stood is known. It was made in the early Goryeo period and stands 315 cm tall in all, with a five-storey body set on a single-tier base. The base consists of a foundation stone made of two newly fashioned stones, on which four slab stones are assembled and topped with a capstone; the base's face stones show no carved corner pillars. The upper surface of the capstone is sloped to shed rainwater, and at its centre sits a three-tiered body-support moulding with alternating square and rounded profiles. The body stones and roof stones (the stones that cap a pagoda or stone lantern like a roof) are each made of a single piece; from the second storey upward the body contracts sharply, reflecting the proportional tapering typical of Goryeo-period stone pagodas. The body has five storeys; each square body stone has corner pillars carved faintly in relief on its faces. The body stones of the first to third storeys are original, but those of the fourth and fifth storeys were added later as repairs. The roof stones of the third and fourth storeys, together with the finial base, are likewise newly made. Beneath each roof stone are three tiers of roof-support moulding. The eaves form a steep curve, running level at the centre of each side before turning up sharply at the corners. Above the roof stones the body-support mouldings differ from storey to storey, carved with two tiers at the first storey and one tier at the second. The pagoda is relatively small in scale. The absence of carved corner pillars on the base's face stones, together with the distinctive body-support mouldings on the capstone and roof stones, suggest that it was built in the early Goryeo period.
