Yeongsansa is a sau, a Confucian memorial shrine, established in 1732, the eighth year of King Yeongjo, to hold memorial rites for nine loyal subjects of the Wonju Yi clan, led by Yi Gye-jeong (1542–1596), who was named a meritorious subject for his achievements during the Japanese invasions of 1592, together with Yi Suk-hyeong, Yi Hwang, Yi Dae-haeng, Yi Ho, Yi Sun, Yi Won-hae, Yi Jun and Yi Seong-chun. Among the documents held here, those designated as Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Materials include the Seonjo Milbu Yuji, a secret tally (milbu) and secret royal order (yuji) issued by King Seonjo after Yi Gye-jeong was appointed Naval Commander of Chungcheong Province, and other military-related royal orders from the time of the Japanese invasions of 1592 recording King Seonjo's instructions to Yi Gye-jeong, as Naval Commander of Chungcheong, on managing military supplies and provisions. There are also the Seonmu Wonjong Gongsin Nokgwon, a certificate recording the honour of meritorious subject of secondary rank, granted to Yi Sun in 1605, the 38th year of King Seonjo; the Jinmu Wonjong Gongsin Nokgwon granted to Yi Gwang-rip in 1625, the third year of King Injo; the Gwanan, relating to Yi Yu, who served as a recording official (girisagwan) at the Chunchugwan, the state historiography office; and the Yeongsan Wonjeok, a list of the Confucian scholars, including Hong Man-jo, the first head of the academy at the time Yeongsansa was founded. As documents revealing concrete details such as the system for transmitting royal commands in wartime and the conduct of military operations under royal instruction during the turmoil, they are valued as material that can supplement research on the Japanese invasions of 1592.
