Daeseongjeon Hall of Uljin Local Confucian School
울진향교 대성전 · 蔚珍鄕校 大成殿

A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local people. Uljin Local Confucian School was first built at Wolbyeon-dong in 1484, the 15th year of King Seongjong of Joseon; it was moved to Seongseo-dong in Goseong-ri during the reign of King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720), and then moved again to its present site in 1872, the ninth year of Emperor Gojong. It was entirely destroyed by fire during the Korean War, and the lecture hall, Myeongnyundang, was restored in 1979, bringing it to its present form. Daeseongjeon is the hall enshrining the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. It has a front of five kan and a side of three kan, and its roof is a plain gabled roof shaped like the Chinese character 人 (meaning "person") when viewed from the side. During the Joseon period the state provided land, slaves and books to support the teaching of students here, but today the educational function has disappeared and only the memorial rite function remains.
