This is the site of the house where Kim Suk-ja (1389–1456), a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period, settled, and where his son Kim Jong-jik (1431–1492) spent his entire life. Kim Suk-ja studied under Gil Jae from the age of twelve and, after passing the civil service examination in 1419, the first year of King Sejong, held posts such as county magistrate. In the lineage of orthodox Neo-Confucian learning (dotong) built up by the literati scholars (sarim) who spread Neo-Confucianism in the 16th century, Gil Jae's learning was passed down through his son Kim Jong-jik, who is now recognised as a towering figure of Neo-Confucianism. This building, damaged repeatedly through wars, was rebuilt in 1810, the tenth year of King Sunjo, by local literati and his descendants.
