Standing Daegyo-ri Stone Buddha
대교리석불입상 · 大校里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands in Daegyo-ri, Hongseong-eup, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and is also known as the Maitreya Buddha of the Gwanggyeongsa Temple site. Small, snail-shell-shaped curls were attached to the head, and the eyes, nose and mouth of the face are carved in shallow relief. The fist-like nose, thick lips and elongated eyes together produce a markedly comical expression. The outline of the body is rendered in simple lines, and carving was executed on the front face only. The figure wears a robe covering both shoulders, with U-shaped folds carved running from the chest down to the feet. The right hand rests against the chest, while the left hand is raised with the palm turned outward. Given the rough carving technique and the lack of proportion, the statue appears to have been made during the Joseon period as an object of folk worship.
