Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Confucian academy enshrining the portraits of Ha Yeon and his wife, Lady Yi of Seongsan, who held the honorific title of Jeonggyeongbuin (a title granted to wives of senior officials). Ha Yeon was a civil official of the early Joseon period whose pen names were Gyeongjae and Sinhoe. A student of Jeong Mong-ju, he passed the singnyeon mungwa (the regular triennial state civil examination) in the third class (byeonggwa) in 1396, the fifth year of King Taejo. He subsequently rose through a succession of senior offices to become Chief State Councillor. After entering the State Council, he served for more than twenty years with integrity and strict adherence to the law, and was known as a chief minister of an age of peace and culture. In 1821, the twenty-first year of King Sunjo, Baeksanseowon Confucian Academy received a royal plaque reading 'Tajinsa' from the state and became a saaek seowon (an academy granted a royal charter), but it was abolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing Confucian academies. It was rebuilt by descendants in 1917 and renamed Baeksanseowon, the name it retains today. The buildings standing today are Tajinsa, Baeksansa and a lecture hall. In the centre of Tajinsa are enshrined the spirit tablets and portraits of Ha Yeon and his wife, and to the right the spirit tablet of Ha Wi-guk. It measures one bay across the front and one bay deep, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). Baeksansa enshrines the spirit tablets of Ha Jing-do, Ha Jeong-do, Ha Hyeong-do and Ha Hyeon-do. It measures three bays across the front and one bay deep, with a gabled roof. The lecture hall is used for various events, gatherings and education. It measures four bays across the front and one bay deep, with a hipped roof that, seen from the front, forms a trapezoid shape. This academy has long performed memorial rites for sages and played a part in local education, and rites are still held every year in the third and ninth lunar months.
