고성 소천정 · 固城 蘇川亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSocheonjeong is a pavilion built by his descendants to honour the achievements of Choi Gang (pen name Sogye, 蘇溪 崔堈). The site on which the pavilion stands is where Choi Gang practised martial arts as a boy. After passing the mugwa, the military examination, in 1585, the 18th year of King Seonjo, Choi Gang raised a righteous army together with his elder brother Choi Gyun (pen name Soho, 蘇湖 崔均) when the Japanese invasion broke out in 1592, winning many victories in the area between Goseong and Jinhae. After the invasion he served as Naval Commander of the Left of Gyeongsang Province and as Naval Commander of Chungcheong Province. For these achievements he was given the posthumous title Uisuk. Socheonjeong stands on the north-western slope of a hill, facing south. It has a front of four kan and a side of one-and-a-half kan, and is composed of one kan combining a wooden floor and a heated ondol room, two kan of heated rooms with an attached narrow veranda (toenmaru), and one kan of wooden-floored room. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof with a square eave and a triangular upper section. In its bracket style, only the upper part of the front veranda is decorated with small blocks called soro (a sorosujang-jip style), while the rest of the building follows the plainer jangyeosujang-jip style. There are three purlins (dori), the beams laid across the tops of the columns to carry the rafters. At the front stands a gate called Sowonmun, a three-kan gate with a single eave and a hipped-and-gabled roof. The pavilion holds relics including one copy of the Pojeon Sillok and one royal certificate honouring its subject as a Seonmu Wonjong Gongsin, a meritorious subject of secondary rank.
