Seated Gwanggyeongsa Temple Epitaph Tablet Buddha
광경사지석불좌상 · 廣景寺址石佛座像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seated stone Buddha stands at Yongjusa Temple in Naebeop-ri, Hongseong-eup, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. It originally stood at Gwanggyeongsa Temple in Daegyo-ri, Hongseong-eup, and was moved to its present site in 1975. Carved from granite, the statue's head is only indistinctly worked, and its topknot-shaped hair bun is also relatively small. The round face has a lifelike quality, and in the straight, elongated eyes traces remain of pearls once inset as pupils. On the neck are three creases, known as samdo, a conventional motif in Buddhist iconography, and the robe falls in parallel ridged folds, a technique resembling that of the Iron Seated Vairocana Buddha of Dopiansa Temple, a national treasure. On the pedestal on which the Buddha sits, lotus petals are rendered in a simplified form. Taking together the lifelike facial expression and the simply rendered lotus-patterned pedestal, the work is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
