Bunyangseowon Confucian Academy
분양서원 · 汾陽書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Confucian academy built to honour the scholarship and virtue of Nam-eun Seo Seop and Chwijeong Seo Hyo-jae. Seo Seop served as Minister of Personnel (Ijo panseo) during the reign of King Sejong (r. 1418–1450); grieving over the martyrdom of the Sayuksin (the 'Six Martyred Ministers', officials executed for remaining loyal to the deposed King Danjong), he later retired to the countryside, where he spent the rest of his life in seclusion, teaching younger scholars. Pungseongdang, a village school (seodang) belonging to the Seo clan of Dalseong, was relocated to Jiseong-ri in Mupung-myeon and rebuilt; renamed Bunyangjeongsa in 1901, it was used for ancestral rites, and in 1945 Sungmosa Shrine was built to its east. The academy took its present name, Bunyangseowon, in 1973. The buildings surviving today are Sungmosa Shrine, a lecture hall, one building called Hwasuheon, and one gatekeeper's quarters (sujiksa). Sungmosa measures three bays across the front and one bay deep, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). The lecture hall measures four bays across the front and one bay deep, finished with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 八 (eight).
