The site is said to have originally been the location of a temple called Jeonghwasa Temple, but the present house was built in 1852, the third year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, by Go Jae-geuk, and has survived to this day. It has the straight-line layout commonly found in the southern region. Because the slope of the land is steep, the building is arranged across three terraced levels. The lowest level holds the main gate and servants' quarters; the next level contains the yard, a storehouse and a management building; and the uppermost level holds the main house and a Western-style building. The main hall measures five bays across the front and two bays on the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 八 (meaning "eight") when viewed from the side. Pine, zelkova, crape myrtle and bamboo trees grow together around the house, adding to the charm of this traditional Korean house.
