불영사 부도 · 佛影寺 浮屠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stupa, a reliquary monument for sarira (relics), stands beside the entrance to Buryeongsa Temple and enshrines the sarira of the early Joseon monk Yangseongdang. Yangseongdang's personal name was Hyeneung; he left home to become a monk at the age of twelve. He died in 1696, the twenty-second year of King Sukjong, and when his body was cremated sarira were found among the remains, so a stupa was built here to house them. The stupa stands on a square base stone, above which sits a flat, round pedestal supporting a bell-shaped body. Lotus patterns are carved around the sides of the pedestal, and a lotus-petal collar forms a support at the shoulder of the body, topped by a finial in the shape of a flower bud. The stupa was erected in 1696, the year of the monk's death, in the twenty-second year of King Sukjong, and the memorial stele was set up in 1736, the twelfth year of King Yeongjo.
