장성 가산사 소장 익재 영정 · 長城 佳山祠 所藏 益齋 影幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of the late-Goryeo civil official Ikjae Yi Je-hyeon (1287–1367). Through his exchanges with Zhao Mengfu and others at the Mangwondang in Yuan China, he introduced new scholarship and ideas to Goryeo and played an important role in spreading and developing Neo-Confucianism. He introduced the calligraphy style of Zhao Mengfu, and wrote works including the Guksa (National History) and the Yeogong paeseol. Four portraits of him survive, of which this is one. It is a copy made in the late 18th century after the original, now held in the National Museum of Korea, which was painted by Chen Jianru in 1319, the sixth year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, when Yi Je-hyeon accompanied the king to China. It is a full-length portrait, showing him seated in a chair and facing left, with both hands clasped together inside his sleeves. Behind the chair stands a table bearing books, an incense burner and a gayageum, a twelve-stringed traditional zither. The pupils, beard and lips appear to have been retouched at a later date. Although it is a copy of the original, the rendering of the face, the treatment of the drapery folds, and the depiction of the chair and objects are almost identical to those of the original.
