Sancheong Sonamni Gwon Clan Old House
산청소남리권씨고가 · 山淸召南里權氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe main building (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the storage building (heotganchae) are arranged one behind the other, forming a layout like the Chinese character 三 (three horizontal strokes). The anchae is a large rectangular building eight bays across the front and two bays deep, with a gable roof shaped, seen from the side, like the Chinese character 人 (person). The sarangchae has six bays across the front and two bays deep, with a two-bay wooden-floored hall (daecheong) at its centre, a door at the rear of the hall, and rooms to either side; the rooms have no door opening directly to the front, only windows for light. When the house was first built it was a typical dwelling of the southern region, but roofs were later extended on both sides and the raised pavilion-style hall and the storage space needed for the kitchen were enlarged, increasing the overall size of the house. Because it was built on sloping ground, the anchae has no raised stone platform, while the sarangchae includes a room with a narrow wooden veranda, a thoughtful arrangement allowing easy passage from the anchae's courtyard into the sarangchae.
