Hong Ga-sin Cheongnan Stele
홍가신청난비 · 洪可臣淸亂碑

This stele was erected to commemorate Hong Ga-sin (1541–1615), who suppressed the rebellion of Lee Mong-hak, so that the event would be handed down to later generations. After the Japanese invasions of 1592 (the Imjin War), successive years of poor harvests had unsettled public sentiment, and Lee Mong-hak, an illegitimate son of the royal clan, took advantage of this to rise in rebellion in the thirtieth year of King Seonjo (1597), attacking Hongju Fortress. At the time Hong Ga-sin, serving as magistrate of Hongju, suppressed the rebellion, and for this achievement was awarded first class among the Cheongnan-gongsin, the meritorious subjects honoured for quelling the disturbance. The stele was erected in the nineteenth year of King Injo (1641); having long gone unattended and fallen into disrepair, it was repaired in 1973 by the magistrate of Hongseong County, and survives in that condition today.
