Sancheong Sonamni Jo Clan Old House
산청소남리조씨고가 · 山淸召南里趙氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krRecords found in the sarangchae (men's quarters) building indicate that the house was built in 1890, the 27th year of King Gojong of Joseon. From outside to inside the buildings are arranged in the order sarangchae, anchae (main building) and sadang (ancestral shrine); the sarangchae, a storehouse building (gotganchae) and the sadang form a square, 'ㅁ'-shaped layout around the anchae at the centre. The anchae has six bays across the front and two bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof shaped, seen from the side, like the Chinese character 八 (eight). The sarangchae has an L-shaped ('ㄱ'-shaped) plan, six bays across the front and two bays deep, with the two bays projecting to the east forming a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) and a raised pavilion-style floor (numaru). This floor has a railing on three sides and folding lattice doors, and the foundation stones beneath it are finished in an octagonal shape, giving it the formal dignity of a pavilion. The sadang is four bays across the front and two bays deep, with a gable roof shaped, seen from the side, like the Chinese character 人 (person). The house preserves well the spatial hierarchy of a scholar-official's residence, a structure in which the Confucian tradition can clearly be seen.
