Tongjin Icheong
통진 이청 · 通津 吏廳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was a government office of Tongjin Dohobu in the Joseon period, a gwana where officials carried out administrative affairs. Tongjin was the site of a ferry crossing to Ganghwado Island, and corresponds to today's Daegot-myeon, Wolgot-myeon, Tongjin-myeon and Haseong-myeon areas of Gimpo. Records such as the Tongjin-eupji (Tongjin Gazetteer) and the Tongjin-jido (Map of Tongjin) document the repair history and scale of Tongjin's government buildings, noting that most of the offices at Tongjin were repaired and renovated in 1869 by Magistrate Baek Nak-seon. At the time of the 1919 March First Independence Movement the building was used for a time as a jujaeso, a police substation run mainly by Japanese police during the Japanese colonial period, equivalent to today's local police box; it was later used as an ordinary house, then fell into disrepair, until Gimpo City acquired and restored it in 2013. The Joseon-period government office buildings still standing in Gyeonggi Province are limited to Paengseong Guest House in Pyeongtaek, Anseong Guest House in Anseong, and the site of the Yangju government office in Yangju. Together with these, Tongjin Icheong is an important relic for understanding the character of government office architecture in Gyeonggi Province. The building measures seven bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (meaning 'eight').
