This stele was erected to commemorate the renovation of Hongjuseong Fortress. Hongju lay on the route to the Yellow Sea and was both a transport hub and a strategic military stronghold in western Chungcheong. Hongjuseong Fortress was built in 1451, the first year of King Munjong of Joseon, when local administrative districts were reorganised. It is famous as the site of a battle in which righteous army leaders including Min Jong-sik, Yi Se-yeong, Chae Gwang-muk and An Byeong-chan rose up in opposition to the Eulsa Treaty, which Imperial Japan had forced through, and drove the Japanese troops stationed in the fortress out to Deoksan, recapturing it. The inscription records that in 1824, the 24th year of King Sunjo, the garrison commander Gim Gye-muk and the magistrate Yi Hyeon-gyu inspected the fortress, lamented its dilapidated state, and had it repaired.
