Eosaok Stele, Changwon
창원 어사옥비 · 昌原 御賜玉碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele is enshrined within the stele pavilion of Moseonjae, the ancestral ritual hall of the Jo clan of Changnyeong. It was granted to the wife of Jo Chi-u, a civil official of the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon, and because it was a gift from the king it is called the Eosaokbi, meaning 'royally bestowed jade stele'. The body of the stele and its capstone were carved and erected as a single piece of stone. Jo Chi-u served as magistrate of Daegu and, for his integrity and outstanding service, was named a cheongbaekri, an official honoured for incorruptibility. He and his wife were each granted a jade stele; his own stele is preserved in Yeongcheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
