Yangdaebakbujachunguimun Gate
양대박부자충의문 · 梁大撲父子忠義門

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis memorial gate was built in 1796 to honour Yang Dae-bak, a loyal subject of the mid-Joseon period, and his son. It is a gable-roofed structure with double eaves, one bay wide and one bay deep; the front uses dressed stone columns with an octagonal cross-section, about 180 cm tall. All four sides of the gate are fitted with hongsal, the red lattice screens traditionally used at memorial and shrine gates, and a plaque reading "父子忠義門" ("Gate of the Loyal and Righteous Father and Son") hangs at the front. Inside stand a stone monument recording the loyal deeds of Yang Dae-bak and his son, measuring about 141 x 55 x 25 cm, together with three wooden plaques. During the Imjin War (1592), Yang Dae-bak raised a volunteer force of more than 1,000 men in Namwon and defeated Japanese troops at the Battle of Unam; his son Gyeong-u gathered military provisions to supply the Ming army. The gate is unusual for its dressed octagonal stone columns at the front, and the form of its brackets, its flower-shaped supports, and its overall appearance follow the architectural style of the late Joseon period.
