Taeansa Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
태안사삼층석탑 · 泰安寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands on a small plot set in the middle of a pond within Taeansa Temple; it was moved here from its original position in front of the budo, the stupa commemorating State Preceptor Gwangja, elsewhere in the temple grounds. One side of the base, the first-storey roof stone, and the second- and third-storey body stones had originally been missing, but when the pagoda was relocated these parts were newly supplied, so that it now stands with a two-tier base and a three-storey body. Below the base is a three-tiered platform built at the time of the move, giving the whole structure an unusually tall appearance. Each tier of the base has pillar shapes carved at the corners and centre of its sides, and its upper surface is cut back in three shallow steps to support the stone above. The roof stones of the body each have four-tiered eaves-supports on their undersides, with the eaves curving up slightly at all four corners. Apart from a low decorative base, the finial at the very top has been entirely remade. Although some parts were lost and later supplied, the pagoda as a whole conveys an even sense of balance and stability. Judging from the carving style of its base and roof stones, it is thought to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
