Jeolryeoryang Jeong Clan Jiryeo
절렬양정씨지려 · 節烈兩丁氏之閭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis memorial gate (jeongnyeogak) was built to honour the fidelity and chastity of two women. It was erected in 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong, and repaired in 1819, the nineteenth year of King Sunjo. Both women were descendants of Jeong Hwang (丁煌, 1512–1560), and their stories are recorded on a plaque hung inside the memorial. One woman was assaulted by Japanese invaders during the 1597 Jeongyu War and threw herself into water to take her own life; the other refused food after her husband's death and followed him in death, preserving her fidelity to the end. The memorial gate displays the outstanding architectural craftsmanship of the late Joseon period. Although the building measures only one kan each in width and depth, the front is comparatively wide, giving it an open, spacious feel, and the interior is divided into two bays, each holding the memorial plaque (jeongnyeopan) for one of the two women.
