This jeongnyeo, a memorial gate erected to honour exemplary virtue, was built to commend the fidelity of Lady Yi, wife of Yang Su-saeng, who had served as jikjehak, a senior scholarly post, in Goryeo. After her husband Yang Su-saeng died, Lady Yi refused her parents' request that she remarry, as was the custom of the time, and came to live in Gumi-ri, where she raised their son Yang Eun-bo to carry on the family line. It is said that the many eminent figures who later emerged among Yang Eun-bo's descendants were all owed to Lady Yi's efforts. After Lady Yi passed away, King Sejo of Joseon, on learning of her conduct, granted a jeongnyeo in 1467 so that she would serve as a model for later generations. However, the stele and the jeongnyeo pavilion itself were not erected until some 200 years later, in 1774, the fiftieth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, as a building one kan wide and one kan deep with a hip-and-gable roof and double eaves. Regarding this jeongnyeo, the Okcheon-gunji, published in 1760, includes the "Biography of the Faithful Lady Yi" written by the late-Joseon Neo-Confucian scholar Yi Jae, pen name Doam; it is also said that the memorial stele sweats whenever a major event befalls the nation.
