Nongsanjeong Pavilion, Hapcheon
합천 농산정 · 籠山亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNongsanjeong is a pavilion built by Choe Chi-won (857–?), a scholar and literary figure of the late Silla period, as a place where he read books and played baduk (the board game go) and rested during his years of reclusion. Choe Chi-won is one of the most representative Confucian scholars of Silla. He travelled to study in Tang China and passed the state examination there; when the Huang Chao Rebellion broke out in China, he made his name by writing a proclamation denouncing Huang Chao. After returning home he strove for political reform, but when his proposals were not accepted, he left government office and spent the rest of his life in seclusion on Gayasan Mountain. The exact date the pavilion was first built is not known. It was dismantled and rebuilt in its original form in 1922, then repaired again in 1936, bringing it to its present state. The building measures two kan each in width and depth, and is covered with a hipped-and-gabled roof (paljakjibung), shaped like the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side.
