Heojeon Hall Cheolmyeongpyeon Woodblocks
허전 철명편 목판 · 許傳 哲命篇 木板

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe portrait of Seongjae Heo Jeon is painted in colour on silk cloth and is thought to date from the late Joseon period; it measures 80 cm × 140 cm. The woodblocks are 57 leaves of the Cheolmyeongpyeon (哲命編), part of Seongjae's collected writings (32 volumes in 17 books in total). Each block has a single-ruled border on all four sides enclosing a printed frame measuring 19.6 cm × 13.5 cm, with ten lines of twenty-two characters per line and a double-petalled, inward-facing fish-tail mark at the centre of the page used to guide folding. The overall block measures 30.3 cm × 19.2 cm. Seongjae's collected writings were printed in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, in 1890, with a sequel printed in 1903; this Cheolmyeongpyeon is thought to have been carved in 1890. The blocks are now heavily worn from long use, with the end caps all missing and only the printed surfaces remaining, and it is not known why only this Cheolmyeongpyeon survives here in Heojeon Hall.
