This stele was erected to commemorate the defence of Naju fortress by government troops fighting the Donghak Peasant Army when the Donghak Peasant Revolution broke out in 1894, the 31st year of Emperor Gojong. The stele body stands on a pedestal carved with a turtle, topped with a roof-shaped capstone; the pedestal is buried in the ground, with only its upper part visible. The inscription is divided broadly into three parts: an account of how the peasant uprising arose and the Donghak army advanced as far as Naju; the fact that Min Jong-yeol, the magistrate of Naju-mok at the time, directed his commanders and drew up a thorough defence plan; and a detailed description of the fighting between government troops and the Donghak army at Naju-mok. The stele is thought to have been raised through the joint efforts of Confucian scholars opposed to the Donghak army; the inscription was composed by Gi U-man and written by Song Jae-hoe, and the stele was set up in 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong. It records in relatively full detail the historical events of the Honam region centred on Naju during the Donghak uprising, making it an important source for research into the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
