Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house of the Miryang Son clan, set on flat ground in the south of Gyo-dong village. It was built in 1901, the fifth year of the Gwangmu era under Emperor Gojong of Joseon, and consists of a gate quarters, a main house (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae) and a storehouse wing. Entering through the main gate, one finds the sarangchae, five bays across the front and two bays deep. Beside it a middle-gate quarters of five bays by one bay connects, turning in an L-shape, to a small sarang wing of four bays across the front. From the right are the sarang room, the daecheong (an open wooden-floored hall) and the kitchen, with a half-bay-wide toenmaru (a narrow veranda-like floor along the eaves) set in front of the sarang room and the hall. Beside the kitchen are a storeroom, a shed, a middle gate and a stable, and the small sarang room, storeroom and lower room are arranged turning toward the inner courtyard. Entering through the middle gate, the anchae stands directly ahead, measuring seven bays across the front and two bays deep. From the left are the kitchen, the main room and the daecheong, each two bays wide, with a one-bay sangbang (a secondary room used for guests) on the right. A half-bay-wide toenmaru runs along the front between the main room and the sangbang. The storehouse wing stands where it turns in an L-shape from the anchae, and consists of a shed, a foot-powered mill house and a storeroom. There is a small kitchen garden below the sarang yard and the wall, and in front of it stands the gate quarters. The gate quarters, five bays across the front and one bay deep, has a raised central gate, taller than the roofline on either side, flanked by a storeroom and a room. It is a valuable resource that well illustrates the domestic architecture of the late Joseon period.
