Ungok Village School
운곡서당 · 雲谷書堂

This is a seodang (village school, a private Confucian academy for elementary learning) built to commemorate and carry on the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Geumong Kim Hak-bae (1628–1673) and Jeogam Kim Tae-jung (1649–1711). Kim Hak-bae was a civil official of the later Joseon period. He passed the state examination in 1663, the fourth year of King Hyeonjong, and rose to the post of jwarang in the Ministry of Rites. He devoted himself to scholarship and to training younger students, and his writings are collected in the Geumong Munjip (Collected Works of Geumong). Kim Tae-jung was a disciple of Kim Hak-bae who devoted himself entirely to scholarly study and the training of the next generation. Ungok is the storied site where Kim Hak-bae built Ungye Lodge and transmitted his learning to his disciples, including Kim Tae-jung. Three years after the lodge was built, however, Kim Hak-bae moved to Geumyang, and it stood empty for eighteen years. In 1690, the sixteenth year of King Sukjong, Kim Tae-jung repaired Ungok Lodge and devoted himself there to scholarship and the training of younger students. In 1761, the thirty-seventh year of King Yeongjo, later students rebuilt it as a school of four bays across the front and two bays deep, and named it Ungok Village School.
